My poor baby boy is teething right now and so far, so good. He’s not too cranky or fussy as long as you hold him. Put him down and there will be hell to pay.
I saw the recipe for these teething biscuits in Wondertime magazine and thought I’d try to make them in order to give him something to play with if I happened to put him down. Distraction is the name of the game, people.
It couldn’t be simpler:
2 cups flour
3 tablespoons applesauce
1/2 cup maple syrup
Mix together until it forms a ball of dough. Flatten it out and cut out shapes using the cookie cutter. Bake at 300 degrees for 35 minutes or until barely brown. Let cool and eat! (To make them extra hard, leave them out overnight.)
They’re tasty, but very very hard (so it won’t break off in the baby’s mouth, which would be a choking hazard).
My son tried it and gummed it for a few seconds before hurling it across the room. Apparently, my “Chunky Boy” (as his sister calls him) doesn’t like tasting food. It’s all or nothing with that boy.
If you try this recipe, let me know how you liked it!
I’m going to do this for Ayren! Doesn’t sound hard at all.
I think I might try this for Jaedyn tomorrow, it’ll give us something to do and his greedy self will try anything that goes into his mouth!
We used frozen slim jims for our two youngest because of a choking incident with Gerber teething biscuits with my oldest. Buy the small slim jims at the grocery, put them in the freezer and them rotate them out as they thaw when the baby chews on them. This was a life saver with the two youngest and they are still slim jim fans:) These also travel well, just leave them in the package until use. Hope this helps.
glad you posted this I had found it in a magazine a few years ago & didnt know what I had done with it- IT IS AWESOME!!!
I think these teething cookies are Great! My kids grew up on Gerber Teething Biscuits. I loved those as well. Now that I have 2 Grandchildren both teething, and I was unable to find Gerber anywhere, I went in search of recipes for Teethers. The kids Love them and If made correctly, harder than Heck! Thanks for the recipe. Easy as can be. 😉
@Arlice – Nope, it’s not hard at all. Just make sure you add flour to whatever surface you’re working on so the dough isn’t so sticky. But they worked out great for me! Also, just use circular cookie cutters. I used star shaped ones and they were kind of hard for lil’ man to hold.
