Dear son,
One year ago, I was just supremely uncomfortable and hungry. Anxious to meet whoever this was taking up precious room in my stomach. I wanted another girl, but I thought from the way you had been flipping and tumbling and kickboxing, chances were good that I would have a boy.
On August 4, 9:44 a.m., the doctor held you up and over the wailing and screaming, I heard him say, “Wow, your son has some powerful lungs.”
My son? I’m thinking to myself. Did he say my son? I have a son?
And then I saw you.
I’ll admit, the first thing I thought was, this kid has some freakin’ huge balls. I mean really. They were right at eye level.
Then I kept looking at this chubby baby they keep saying is mine. There’s no way I have a son, I thought.
I was in shock.
You were the first boy to be born in our family in the last 30 years. My little prince.
Your daddy was estastic, but he tried hard to keep his cool.
You were so cute. You didn’t like all the noise and commotion going on, so when they placed you on the little side table to get you cleaned up and wrapped up, you put your little arm over your eyes and went to sleep. As if you said, “It’s too damn bright in here…y’all wore me out. I need a power nap. See you in 30 mins. ”
The doctors said that I had made the right choice for a C-section, since they even had trouble getting you out of my belly. Your head was freakin’ huge. All I kept hearing was, “Scapel….I need the scapel…..can you hand me the scapel…”
But it was soo worth it. You are without a doubt one of the easiest, most pleasant babies I have ever seen. Content as long as you’re full. You give me these smiles that make me wonder, “Where have you been all my life?”
This first year went by so fast. I wanted you to stay a baby just a tiny bit longer, but you were so determined to grow up and get into things. I say things while watching you that no mother should have to say to a baby: “Get out of the fireplace….Don’t eat your sister’s leg!…It’s not nice to eat mommy’s shoes…Put those weights down…Why do you keep breaking your bottles?…Did you break this lamp?”
You keep me busy.
But I love you so freakin’ much. You are more than my air. You are just…my everything. You make it impossible to have a bad day. You make Mommy happy even when the rest of the world decides its “Let’s poop on TheYoungMommy” day.
You are my little prince. And I love you.
Forever and for always,
Mommy
how sweet!! He is adorable.
aw what a sweet post! Happy Birthday to your little guy
I’m a 31-year old non-mommy, but reading your post today makes me wish that I was one! I hope your Little Prince has a Happy and Blessed Birthday.
Aw, Happy Happy Birthday to your little one. And many many more.
Aww, I would never be over here fighting back tears. I <3 my lil Jack-Jack lol
Boys are great! You are lucky. But you will also be tired — so make sure to get enough sleep. http://www.powernapkit.com
Two are more fun than one, but that’s easy for me to say ’cause I’m a guy. But my wife would agree, and now our “boys” are 22 and 23. All the best, John
What a beautiful post. And he is absolutely adorable! I just love having a baby boy sooo much!!!

Wow…this had me tearing up at my desk! I,too, have been blessed with an amazing son who turned 1 last month. Folks kept asking us why didn’t we want to know what we were having, but I’m soooo glad we didn’t give in and find out – his arrival was a wonderful surprise that I enjoy more and more each day. As I looked at him enjoy putting icing, ice cream, and cake in his hair and all over his face during his birthday celebration, I found myself thanking God all over again for choosing ME to bring HIS creation forth. Although we will look forward to giving him a sibling in a few years, he will always be my baby.
SOOOO Sweet! I agree, baby boys definitely keep you on your toes but they are so wonderful. I still find it amazing that I created something that I could never be (a man).
@Erica – I know, it still amazes me that I created a boy! A lil’ penis and everything! LOL.
