I am one of the newest mom bloggers over at WorkingMother.com, the online home of Working Mother magazine.
Now, I have a subscription to Working Mother (Maghound.com – look into it!) so I read it every month. And I know I’m not their target demographic. But they do have great tips on how to balance your roles as mom and employee, something that I find myself struggling with EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.
I’m writing over there as the young professional mama, posting weekly (or as often as I can churn out these posts) in the Mom Blog about the realities of being a 20something working mom. Cool, right?
I want to keep blogging here, but I also want to branch out and write on other sites so I can keep the conversation going. For so long, I’ve felt that society viewed young mothers as “less than,” as moms who weren’t as committed, as capable, as loving as their older counterparts.
But now I realize that if people view us that way, then it’s up to us to make our voices louder, to prove that we deserve a place at the table. Who’s with me?!
I’ll be linking to my posts from here, so if you’d like to support and give weight to the voice of young mothers everywhere, leave me lots of comments! I’ll appreciate it more than you know!
Congratulations! You will add a lot to their publication and shake things up. Looking forward to visiting.
Yaay for you!
Have you thought about hiring a nanny or babysitter? They can make your life so much easier! Your kids stay at home in their familiar surroundings, get sick less often, the nanny can help out with chores around the house and even make dinner. A great resource for nannies and babysitters as well as childcare advice is http://www.nannypro.com. Check it out!
Congratulations Tara! I was just talking to my Best Friend on how wonderful the Working Mother magazine is. I only get to read it in my doctor’s office. I know you’ll do well. P.S. I’m a 20-something year old mother-to-be. I’m so excited. I read your blog often, but this is my first comment.
@Clarissa – Well, thanks, love! I appreciate it! And I’m sure you will be a great mom. I’ll have to mosey on over to your blog to check it out!
I agree with you. I’ve {professionally} had older women refer to me as ‘honey’ or ‘young lady’ with – you know – that *tone* and personally I find it to be very demeaning… as though they only viewed me as some young idiot that was still wet behind the ears when realistically, I could easily give THEM a good run for their positions with little effort Don’t EVER underestimate the underdog, ya know?
But seriously, I resent the fact that it seems I’m not taken seriously because of my age – and I do believe it has a lot to do with the fact that I have five children because people automatically assume since I’ve popped out 5 kids over the last 10 years {or because I’ve been having them since I was 17} that I have no kind of proper education. Well, you know what they say about assuming. haha
Just because I’m a young mom doesn’t mean I’m an idiot, uneducated, or inexperienced. In all actuality, there aren’t many things that I CAN’T do… and most of them involve manual labor LOL
*Sorry if there are typos – I happen to have a 15 month old dropping things on my keyboard as I type LOL*
@Kat – PLEASE preach!!!! “I resent the fact that it seems I’m not taken seriously because of my age.” I love this sentence! I sometimes wonder if I’d be so resentful if I didn’t have kids. If I were the average, single, childless 23 year old, would I be as sensitive? Or is it the fact that I’m young and I’m raising kids, one of the most difficult jobs in the world, I feel slighted when it’s assumed that I can’t do something that I consider to be far easier…..
I think your writing style is perfect. Honestly you give more dignity and credibility with your honesty, intelligence and humor. I tend to agree with you, in my experience being a younger mother made teachers and others think i didnt know what i was doing when nothing could be further from the truth. I’m glad you’ve got a strong voice and ar expanding to other publications to get out the message. Good for you and great for young moms like us. link those posts ill be sure to pass by and share them with others. congrats!
@Erykah – I don’t know how you stumbled on my blog or how I stumbled upon yours, but I’m glad I did. Your writing is so honest, so real that I can sit and just re-read your posts for hours. You have some really great stuff over there…
Congratulations Tara!! I know that you will represent us young mommies well. I will definitely be commenting on your posts.
