Do You Wear An “S” On Your Chest?

In the pursuit of living out your dreams, a very precious commodity gets lost. That commodity is time. There never seems to be enough hours in a day. Staying up late is mandatory. Skipping social events is a must-do. Your calendar and laptop become your best friends. And you wouldn’t have it any other way. This is the definition of a grind. Cue “Superwoman” by Alicia Keys.

I recently took  a part-time job as an Adjunct Faculty member for a local vocational college. Add this to my already very busy life that includes a full time job, a husband, a busy little girl, and this here blog…to say that I’ve got a lot on my plate is an understatement.

Yes, I’m busy. But this is how I define my grind. I’m willing to do what I have to do to provide for my family and excel in my personal endeavors. The teaching job will allow me to do both of those things. The lack of sleep and time away from my family sucks, but it’s a temporary sacrifice as I strive to achieve great things.

While discussing my crazy new schedule with a friend of mine (I’m teaching two consecutive nights a week from 6-10pm), she said to me, “Wow Amber, you’re a true modern woman!” I had to let that one marinate for a moment. Me? A modern woman?

After thinking about it for a while, I guess you can say that I’ve achieved the “holy grail” of modern womanhood (as defined by society).

Loving husband? Check.

Beautiful, healthy baby? Check.

An advanced degree and thriving career? Double check.

The moral of the story here is not to run down a list of my life’s accomplishments, but to say, loud and clear, that “YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL.”

Having it all may mean something different to each of you that will read this post. You might do things in a different order, like our girl, Tara. Or you might be doing it on the solo tip, like the always lovely, Alicia Harper. Or you might have an awesome support system, like me.

Either way, you can do it.

You can be a mom, a student, a professional, a wife, a whatever you decide to be…all at the same time, or one by one. My life is proof of that.

So get busy pursuing, chasing, and achieving your goals. If you don’t have any, get some. Today.

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes of all time:

It always seems impossible until it’s done. – Nelson Mandela

How do you define your grind?

  1. Ms. Prince says:

After reading this post I say that I too am a Modern Woman and a Superwoman! Raising two boys, a full-time job, teaching two courses at a university and balancing a relationship. Ladies, we can do it all! Balance is key and balance looks differently for each person. Know what you want and then go get it!

  2. It’s a continuous balancing act but it has to be done to make my dreams come true. So if you’re looking for me – you’ll find me on my grind!

  3. To all those supersheroes out there – YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Applause to all of us.

  4. I think you make a few great points. Women can have it all, some have it all at the same time and others have it all one goal at a time. I personally cannot thrive if I am not in a “constant state of busy”!

With that being said, I am reminded of something a former supervisor once told me, “You can do a whole lot of things wrong, or a few things right.” I am realistic about what I can I do in a day, week, month and year. I’ve had to resolve to the fact that I don’t have to be “super woman” but I can achieve my goals with a little hard work, motivation, discipline, planning and organization.

  5. Ummm Amber… you better SPEAK it! Great minds really do think alike because I have a [somewhat] similar post scheduled to go live in like a week. (hehe).

But, man… this one really hit home. This: “You can be a mom, a student, a professional, a wife, a whatever you decide to be…all at the same time, or one by one. My life is proof of that.”

And this: “If you don’t have any, get some. Today.”

    WORD!

  6. Thank you Amber. People tell me I can’t be superwoman and your post is proof that I certainly can. And I will. I’m going to continue my grind on a daily basis and I won’t let anything or anyone stop me.
