{YML Voices} On The Path To Becoming A Doula

by Gaetane Joseph

Most people I know do not know the role that a doula plays in a life of a family during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. I must admit, I was also guilty of the same thing prior to having children. It is not until I was pregnant with my 1st born, Addaeyomi, and was planning to deliver at a birthing center did I even hear mention of the word doula.

“The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves” and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.” -DONA INTERNATIONAL

I assumed that a midwife or doctor would provide me with such support but during my births, they simply delivered Addaeyomi and congratulated me. My family was always visiting and providing advice but I did not have an individual who simply provided continuous support. Quite frankly, we as new mothers need the same love and attention after we deliver.

It is not until I delivered my daughter, Anaiziya at home did I have a doula. She was so amazing and knew exactly what I needed. I was comforted during those moments of self doubt, fatigue, and bliss. I was given the most amazing back massage and heard the most empowering words whispered into my ears while I labored. It was a “perfect” birth. I thanked her repeatedly because I recalled not having such support during my first birth.

This sparked the flame in me to provide a mother with that very same feeling. As I completed my DONA Birth Doula training in Miamilast month, I knew I would do just that. I learned the many important roles that doulas played for a laboring mother, family, and community. And you DO NOT have to be wealthy to afford a doula. There are tons of doulas who will work with you financially in order to provide you with your “perfect” birth. I recommend you check out: http://www.dona.org/ to find local certified doulas in your area.

  1. I think this is great. When I had my first child I had her in a hospital. Mr. C and I agreed that whenever #2 does come along we’ll do thing differently. I’m glad that you decided to be there for the women during their time in need, like the doula was there for you. I think it’s very noble.
