Staying Healthy With Doc McStuffins Season 2

Doc-McStuffins-post-31When my daughter gets sick, it becomes a real nightmare faster than you can say, “Do you feel okay, sweetie?”

She has the unfortunate asthma/allergy combo that makes a simple cold a multi-day production to help her get better. There’s the breathing treatments every four hours, the fever medication to bring her temperature down, the elevation of her bed to help the mucus drain and all the other steps to help her feel more comfortable.

And the doctor’s visits. Oh, the doctors.

She’s been poked and prodded a lot in her short little life, from allergy tests to chest X-rays to blood tests. Each time I try to let her know what to expect. I’ve found it calms her down when she knows what’s going to happen. Even though I do my best to ask around and get referrals for great pediatric doctors, some are a little lacking with their bedside manner, doing nothing to calm anxious children like my daughter.

Which is why I love Disney Junior’s “Doc McStuffins.” The series creator, Chris Nee, developed the show after dealing with her son’s asthma, wanting something to help “demystify the process of going to the doctor.” And every little bit helps! Since my daughter has started watching Doc McStuffins, taking those trips to check on her asthma aren’t so scary anymore. She’s even gotten confident enough to ask questions on her own. She’ll talk to the doctors and when we leave, she’s in a great mood. This was not the case pre-Doc McStuffins!

Both of my kids watch the show and besides increasing their confidence with doctor’s visits, they’re getting enlightened about staying healthy. I’ve even been able to convince them to drink some of my green smoothies for extra vitamins and nutrients because “Doc says staying healthy is important”! Since then, we’ve been able to cut down on how often my daughter has her asthma flare-ups. They’re fanatical about brushing their teeth and eating a healthy breakfast. All of it is making my job as their mom easier. I’m happy if they’re happy.

The first season of Doc McStuffins was terrific; I can’t wait to see what they bring to the table for season 2. Check out Disney Junior’s “Doc McStuffins” site to explore new episodes or watch a preview here! New episodes air every Friday in September starting on 9/6 on Disney Junior. And watch some great tips on how to keep your kids healthy with a little help from Doc here!

  1. Sorry to read about your daughter’s allergy/asthma struggles :+( As moms, when our child is sick it’s completely heartbreaking. My daughter has bad allergies that would escalate into ear infections and congestion and it took some time for us to discover the right amount and type of medication to keep her healthy and doing great.

It’s funny I came across this post because I am planning to have her start watching Doc McStuffins (primarily so that she can see another little ‘person’ on TV that is brown like her). We keep the TV on Sprout and NickJr, and we love both stations, but I’m starting to venture over into DisneyJr where she can pick up some new shows to enjoy.

  2. We like to eat healthy on the go snacks like baby carrots and grapes

  3. My little one love orange juice so I always keep a sippy cup handy and since he hate for me to do anything for him, I eventually end up giving him the baby wipe or germ-x and we patty-cake in order to get those hands rubbed together.

  4. We take fruit and yogurt with us as on the go snacks.

I try to take snacks with us so that we don’t have to stop for something unhealthy at a convenience store or fast food.

  12. OK I’ll put it down in black and white, I’m a maniac about hand washing. Before, after, during I’m always washing my hands and having Alysia do it too.

  13. I love taking healthy snacks on the go like the squeezable greek yogurts, string cheese, pretzels and berries. :)

  14. As a single mother I attempt to keep my daughter healthy by encouraging her to be a whole well rounded young woman. We …
    1. practice healthy eating habits
    2. maintain physical activity through tumbling classes, playground activities, bike riding, swimming, walking, etc.
    3. maintain a strong religious belief through church/prayer
    4. build healthy friendships and relationships with people in our lives
    5. take time for herself by doing things she enjoys such as art classes, cupcake baking class, story time at the library and
    6. last but not least we spend quality time together and discuss our feelings openly to remain emotionally healthy.

  15. Keep my kids healthy by taking them outside to play everyday no matter
what the weather is like. Limited screen time.

  16. The minute the kids start to get the sniffles, I make some chamomile tea with echinacea and honey, and make them take Emergen-C twice a day. Works like a charm at staving off the full-blown cold.

  17. I try to keep healthy snacks with us on the go, like rice cakes or fruit and water! :)

  18. I keep my children healthy on the go by creating healthy snacks such as almonds, rice cakes, dried fruit and cheese strings and of course water. I make sure they use hand sanitizer wherever we go to ward of nasty germs! I also encourage them to be healthy by taking them for long walks, playing and leading by example.

  19. I have a child who is affected by crazy reactions to certain foods and drinks. It took awhile to figure out what was happening to her but we tried an elimination diet which really brought to light her triggers. After eliminating about 85% of processed foods and trying really hard to cook from scratch, we have alleviated most, if not all, of her reactions. By doing this, I have noticed that she never (knock on wood) gets sick. We do not do flu shots, she is in school (a.k.a germville) and she hardly ever gets sick. So my advice to you, is to start with the inside, build the immune system up by taking away artificial dyes, sugars, high-fructose corn syrup and enriched flours. Incorporating anti-inflammatory foods such as mushrooms, sweet potato and blueberries will naturally fight any inflammation that is known to stimulate asthma and allergies. Best of luck to us all as we enter another flu season. :)

  20. I try to always keep a good variety of fruits available for our go-to snacks instead of chips and cookies; they love green juice/smoothies so that’s also a plus. Veggies however have not been winning alone so still working on that!
As for exercise and aside from their (9, 4, 2, & 6 months) inability to stay still, we make time to just have fun with dancing around the house, taking daily 30-minute walks, and/or trips to the park.

  21. I keep my child healthy by having an available stash of some of the healthier snacks that she likes, such as dried mangos or blueberries.

  22. We try to stay healthy on the go by not giving in to fast food temptations (easier for them than me!) We haven’t seen Doc McStuffins before but it looks fun.

  23. We try to bring full water bottles and simple snacks whenever we go out. I keep a small ball and a frisbee in the car because I love taking the kids to all the different parks around our neighborhood to keep them active. And I always keep a container of hand sanitizing wipes in the car.
