When I was an undergraduate, Andrea Butler was one of the few other black women in the journalism program with me. It didn’t matter that she was in graduate school — it helped to see other faces like mine as we went about our daily lives learning how to lay out compelling magazine pages, conduct compelling interviews and wring those words into compelling stories.
We bonded over our love of magazines and the bright future we knew was ahead of both of us. We took some detours after graduation – Andrea went on to become a high school teacher and I ended up in PR, doing work that was necessary but soul-sucking.
But Andrea never let go of her desire to create a magazine that would fill the void for thousands of young black girls that can’t be filled by the rest of the publications on newsstands. And two years ago, she created Sesi, the quarterly magazine that “covers the black girl mainstream.” She recently left her full-time job to work on Sesi full-time and I swore I would support her endeavors and signed up for a subscription.
A few weeks later, my first issue arrived and I was floored by how much time and energy went into crafting this.
Consider getting a subscription for the young girl in your life. At only $10, you can’t beat the price. In addition to the regular features on fashion and make-up, Sesi dives deeper into topics like healthy relationships and career tips. (I loved the “Work It, Girl!” section which features women who are going after their dreams. The January issue featured Kimberly Bryant, founder of Black Girls Code.)
As I told Andrea after I received my issue, this is the type of magazine I’d love for my daughter to read. Positive and informative with just the right amount of fun and flirty content teen girls love. Congratulations, Andrea! You rock!
Learn more about Sesi magazine on their website, follow them on Twitter or like them on Facebook.
Thanks, Tara, for helping spread the word about Sesi! I’m so glad you enjoyed your first issue!
This is great because our young girls of colors need a magazine that is specifically for them. Yes, there’s Seventeen and those others, but they rarely feature our girls inside or on the covers.
